AESL: Advanced Electromagnetics and Sensors Lab

The lab specializes in designing and implementing electromagnetic structures for radiation and sensing. Our research interests also encompass periodic structures such as frequency-selective surfaces, absorbers, reconfigurable antennas, reflective intelligent surfaces, and electromagnetic interference. In addition, we focus on Optical Signal Processing, where we investigate novel methods to manipulate optical signals to enhance the efficiency and reliability of data transmission. We are also actively working on Fiber Optic Sensors, developing innovative solutions for diverse applications, including healthcare, environmental monitoring, and industrial automation.

AMIL: Antenna and Microwave Innovation Lab

The Antenna and Microwave Innovation Lab is dedicated to advancing next-generation electromagnetic technologies for wireless communication, sensing, and smart systems. The lab focuses on the design and implementation of innovative electromagnetic structures for radiation and sensing, including advanced antennas, frequency-selective surfaces, absorbers, reconfigurable antennas, and reflective intelligent surfaces. Our research also addresses electromagnetic interference and compatibility, developing practical solutions to improve the performance and robustness of modern RF and microwave systems. By combining theoretical modeling, full-wave simulations, and experimental prototyping, the Antenna and Microwave Innovation Lab aims to bridge fundamental research with real-world applications in communications, radar, and intelligent environments.

AEL: Advanced Electronics Lab

The lab pioneers research in core areas, including advanced circuit simulation, precision design tools for electronic system analysis, next-gen automatic measurement techniques, fabrication and characterization of state-of-the-art flexible circuit boards, and rigorous testing protocols to ensure peak performance and reliability in electronic circuits and systems.

TRL: Telecommunications Research Lab

The Telecommunication Research Lab (TRL) was established to promote interaction between the university and industry in telecommunications. Its primary objective is to conduct research and development activities related to systems and subsystems in various telecommunications domains. The TRL plays a vital role in strengthening collaboration between academia and industry, enhancing both teaching and research endeavours at KFUPM. The lab is managed by the IRC-Communication Systems and Sensing.

SESL: Smart Energy Solutions Lab

Smart Energy Solutions Lab is a world-class well-equipped research lab. It contains real-time digital simulators, platforms for controller prototyping, and hardware-in-loop testing facilities along with different supporting equipment such as FACTS controllers, motors, converters, relays, programmable sources, programmable loads, EV batteries, supercapacitors, …etc. The existing resources make it possible to build laboratory prototypes in different areas of renewable energy integration, motor drives, EV charging,…etc.

Our work spans industrial automation, healthcare robotics, and adaptive control techniques, addressing challenges like real-time decision-making and dynamic environment adaptation. The lab is being developed with cutting-edge robotic platforms, advanced sensors, and real-time controllers, fostering innovation in smart manufacturing, autonomous systems, and intelligent control solutions.

USSL: Underwater Signal and Sensing Lab

The lab aims to advance research in underwater sensing, communication, and signal processing. Our focus includes acoustic and optical communication, imaging enhancement, and underwater SLAM, with plans to address challenges like signal attenuation, bandwidth limitations, and color shift using advanced signal processing and machine learning. The lab is being developed with the vision of incorporating state-of-the-art hardware and dedicated water infrastructure, creating an optimal environment for research and innovation.
