Seeing Underground: From Concept to Reality in Well Logging Technology -Dr. Saleh Komies

On March 10, 2026, the Electrical Engineering Department at KFUPM hosted a seminar titled “Seeing Underground: From Concept to Reality in Well Logging Technology,” delivered by Dr. Saleh Komies in Building 59, Room 1001.

During the seminar, Dr. Komies discussed the engineering journey of logging tools—from early concept development to real field deployment—highlighting how theoretical physics is transformed into rugged, downhole instruments. He walked attendees through the lifecycle of innovation using an example development project, focusing on how design decisions evolve from research ideas into practical technologies used in subsurface environments.

Dr. Komies also introduced the Azimuthal Focused Resistivity (AFR) tool as an example of directional reservoir imaging technology. He explained how such tools support subsurface characterization and help improve precision in horizontal and deviated wells by providing high-fidelity insights that guide evaluation and decision-making.

Dr. Saleh Komies is a Focus Area Champion at Saudi Aramco’s Advanced Research Center, where he leads the design and integration of advanced sensing and logging technologies to strengthen formation evaluation, subsurface characterization, and reservoir performance. He holds a BSc and MSc from Heriot-Watt University and a PhD from Imperial College London, and his research focuses on electromagnetic reservoir characterization and downhole multiphysics tools that combine physics, data analytics, and hardware to address complex reservoir challenges.
