GLOBAL OUTLOOK OF HYDROGEN, WITH A SPECIAL FOCUS ON SAUDI ARABIA – Mr. Ahmed Albalawi

On April 20, 2026, the Electrical Engineering Department hosted a seminar titled “Global Outlook of Hydrogen, with a Special Focus on Saudi Arabia,” delivered by Mr. Ahmed Albalawi, Research Fellow in the Utilities and Renewables program at KAPSARC.

The seminar provided a comprehensive overview of hydrogen as an emerging clean energy carrier and its growing role in global decarbonization efforts. The speaker discussed how hydrogen, traditionally used as an industrial feedstock, is being reimagined to support sectors that are difficult to electrify, highlighting both the opportunities and the challenges associated with its large-scale adoption.

Mr. Albalawi explored the key dimensions shaping the hydrogen economy, including technological advancements, economic feasibility, regulatory frameworks, and geopolitical factors. The session also examined Saudi Arabia’s strategic position in the global hydrogen landscape, addressing what it would take for the Kingdom to become a leading exporter in this evolving market.

In addition, the seminar covered fundamental concepts such as hydrogen production methods, key applications, and market development challenges, supported by recent research and insights from KAPSARC. Participants gained a clearer understanding of the current state of the hydrogen sector and its future potential in supporting sustainable energy transitions.
