Electromagnetics for Safer and Smarter Mining: From Exploration to Real-Time Operations -Prof. Atef Z. Elsherbeni

On February 4, 2026, a seminar titled “Electromagnetics for Safer and Smarter Mining: From Exploration to Real-Time Operations” was delivered by Prof. Atef Z. Elsherbeni (Professor of Electrical Engineering, Colorado School of Mines, USA) at the Electrical Engineering Department, KFUPM.

The seminar highlighted how electromagnetic technologies can enable safer and smarter mining operations through real-time monitoring and wireless sensing. Prof. Elsherbeni presented two practical applications developed by the ARC Electromagnetics Research Group at the Colorado School of Mines: a wearable RFID-based localization system for tracking miners in underground, GPS-denied environments, and a smart sensing system for real-time monitoring of tool wear on mining machines.

These examples demonstrated how advanced electromagnetic methods can support safer, more efficient, and data-driven underground mining operations, bridging the gap from exploration to real-time operational decision-making.
